What is the History Walk...
Retrace Los Angeles Founders
Footsteps
-Experience a walk into
History-
Trail of Los Pobladores from
Mission San Gabriel to Olvera Street, Los Angeles.
History Walk,
Monday,
September 1st, 2008
Celebrating the 227th
Anniversary of the founding of El Pueblo la Reina de Los Angeles.
Reenactment
The walk you take today is a
reenactment of the 1781 trek of the original settlers of Los Angeles, known as Los
Pobladores. Recruited in Mexico by agents of Governor Felipe de Neve, the band came in
several groups across the hot deserts of Arizona, Alta and Baja California. They then came
up through the missions at San Diego (founded in 1769) and San Juan Capistrano (founded in
1776). The staging area where they prepared for their objective was the ten-year-old
Mission San Gabriel, founded in 1771and moved in 1775 to its present location. Here they
rested and were outfitted and oriented by Governor de Neve for their new homes along what
is now known as the Los Angeles River.
Who started the Walk
The history walk was started by
author/ historian Mr. T Willard Hunter. He is a
Claremont resident who took a challenge from then Mayor Bradley, to
commemorate the bicentennial of Los Angeles in a meaningful way. My Hunter
thought what could be more meaningful than walking the path that those first
families traveled 200 years previous.
A City is Born
During the first week in September,
44 persons in 11 families, plus four soldiers, proceeded nine miles down the trail to the
river. There on September 4, 1781, they established E1 Pueblo de los Angeles (City of the
Queen of the Angeles). Two-hundred and twenty two years later, Los Angeles has become one
of the most influential of the world's great metropolitan centers.
The Mission
The Mission San Gabriel was
established on September 8, 1771, by Padres Antonio Camera and Pedro Combon, under the
direction of Father Juniper Serra. Because of his creative genius in building several
missions along the E1 Camino Real or Kings Highway, he is sometimes called, "T'he
Father of California." Mission San Gabriel is celebrating its 230th birthday Fiesta
this same weekend.
Los Pobladores 200
They are an ancestrial heritage
association whose ancestors were the original settlers of Los Angeles, who made this trek
two centuries ago. They organized themselves on the 200th anniversary of the founding of
the Pueblo de Los Angeles in October 198 l, to become the Los Pobladores 200. The Los
Pobladores 200 are the sponsors of this event, along with El Pueblo de los Angeles
Historical Association, Olvera Street, and the City of Los Angeles. Many of them, wearing
the red sash are making the trek with you today.
The Walk
